Why is it Better to use Full Size Specimens in Salt Spray Testing

Testing only small parts of a product, instead of full-size specimens may seem like a convenient and affordable solution. But in many cases it is NOT … Testing parts separately or using test panels in the salt spray test, often results in inaccurate outcomes and may cause the final product to fail prematurely.

Assemblies and galvanic corrosion

When for example, different components are assembled and then painted, there is an increased risk of corrosion. This is because the paint may not completely cover the areas where the components are joined, leaving them vulnerable to corrosion.

In addition, there may also be a risk of galvanic corrosion if the assembled components are made of different metals or alloys with different electrochemical properties. This can accelerate the corrosion process and cause further damage to the assembly.

Advantages of full size specimens testing
Using full-size specimens in the salt spray test provides a more realistic picture of the product’s performance in corrosive environments. This is because full-size specimens replicate the intricate geometries, combination of materials and configurations of the final product, accounting for any variations in surface finish or coating thickness.

Full-size specimens testing helps detect any design flaws or manufacturing defects early in the development process. This can save time and money in the long term, as any required modifications can be made before the product enters the production stage.

To sum up
While testing parts may be a convenient and cost-effective option, it’s important to recognize the significance of testing full-size specimens in the salt spray test for accurate results and enhanced product performance.

But how then?
The best thing is to test your product in its entirety. You then test all critical points as they are also present in practical application. If possible, take a random product from a batch, without the production team knowing that this product will be used for a test (we don’t want a “kid glove treatment”).
