Determination of Water-vapour Transmission: How Well Does Your Paint "Breathe"?

The water-vapour transmission test determines the “breathability” of a paint. This is an important property, as the water-vapour transmission ensures that moisture can escape from walls to the outside without causing problems such as blistering, cracking, and mold formation.

We use the ISO 7783 standard for conducting this test.

How do we determine the water-vapour transmission?

A film is made from the paint to be tested. If the paint is not sufficiently self-supporting, the film is made on a porous substrate. The film is then stretched over a special permeability cup. Depending on the chosen method (wet or dry cup), the cup is placed in either a dry or very humid environment. The weight of the cup and its contents is measured daily until the increase or decrease in weight falls within the limits set by the standard.

Based on the time, layer thickness, surface area of the film, and weight, we calculate the water-vapour transmission of the paint.

Reporting and Advice

Within five business days after completing the water-vapour transmission test, you will receive a report with the results. After reading the report, you may still need advice on how to improve the quality of the product.

As specialists in the field of industrial surface treatment, our team members are always available to provide advice and further assistance.
