Taber falling sand test: how well is your product resistant to wear from sand grains?

The Taber falling sand test examines how well your product can withstand sand wear.

How does the Taber falling sand test work?

The sand grains fall through a funnel through a conductive, smooth-finished, straight pipe onto the test panel. We mount the test panel at a 45° angle under the pipe. As abrasives, we usually use Otawa Sillica sand or Sillicon carbide sand. After the test, we can determine the abrasion resistance in two ways:

  • By measuring how much abrasive is needed to wear through the coating;
  • By measuring the weight reduction of the panel under test after a certain amount of abrasive.

On this basis, the wear resistance of your product is expressed.

Reporting and advice

Within five business days of completing the taber falling sand test, you will receive a report with the results. After reading the report you may still need advice on how to improve the quality of the product.
