Color measurement according to ISO 11664

The color of a product has a great influence on its appearance. Therefore, a manufactured product should not have a color difference from previously manufactured products. The degree of color difference determines whether it is disturbing or not. With the naked eye a color difference is difficult to determine exactly. This can cause discussions with your customer/supplier. With a digital color measurement according to ISO 11664 you make the color difference measurable and you can show exactly whether or not a product meets the specifications.

A color measurement involves a visual property of a product, in this case its color. Perceiving a color is only different for each person, it is influenced by who is doing the assessment, the brilliance of the product and the type of light present during the assessment. Therefore, a color measurement in a lab is more reliable; after all, it is objective. This determines whether a deviation in color falls within a pre-agreed margin. This ensures that there can never be any discussion of right or wrong.

These materials can be tested

The color measurement is suitable for all smooth materials with a flat surface of at least 5×3 cm. The color measurement is widely used on plastics, paints and coatings. The measurement is also often used to determine the discoloration of samples in weathering tests such as the QUV test and Xenon test.

Method of working with a color measurement

In a color measurement, we use a spectrophotometer to measure the color expressed in values according to CIELAB. For example, RAL 9005 then becomes:

In a color difference measurement, the color is measured against a reference sample. This allows us to determine whether the color deviation is within the set margin. We represent the deviations of the color in the value Delta E. The Delta E is calculated from the individual deviations in the L, a and b values.

  • With the deviation DL, there is a difference in the lightness or darkness value. With a + there is a difference in the lightness value, with a – there is a difference in the darkness value;
  • With the deviation Da, there is a difference on the red or green axis. With a + the color is redder, with a – the color is greener;
  • In the deviation Db, there is a difference on the yellow or blue axis. With a + the color is more yellow, with a – the color is more blue.

Color measurement is performed in our lab according to ISO standard 11664 and complies with the CIELAB standard. CIELAB is a three-dimensional color ordering system.

Gloss measurement

Gloss is the degree to which a surface of a product reflects light, using a gloss measurement this can be measured in a lab. This involves measuring the reflection of a light beam falling on the material at a certain angle.

The gloss measurement is performed according to the ISO 2813 standard and The color measurement is suitable for all smooth materials with a flat surface of at least 5×3 cm. Gloss measurement is widely used on plastics, paints and coatings. The measurement is also often used to determine the gloss loss of samples in weathering tests such as the QUV test and Xenon test.

Like a color measurement, a gloss measurement takes only a few minutes. In a maximum of five working days, the results are processed in a report.

Reporting and advice

Within five working days of completing the color measurement, you will receive a report with the results. It may be that after reading the report you still need advice to improve the quality of the product.
