EXPLORING SURFACES

ISO 4892-1

The standard ISO 4892-1 is the initial part of ISO 4892, which is a guideline outlining the proper exposure of samples to laboratory light sources.

The tests detailed in ISO 4892 efficiently showcase the resistance of plastics against sunlight and rain in a short amount of time. Consequently, these tests are also referred to as accelerated weathering.

Industry-Standard Weathering Testing Services according to ISO 4892

ISO 4892-1 outlines the general method and scope of the standard, which is applicable to plastics. Among other things, ISO 4892-1 specifies the following requirements:

Water Quality

For ISO 4892-2, the following maximum limits are set:

  • 1 µg/g of solid matter
  • 0.2 µg/g of silicates
  • Conductivity < 5 µS/cm (conductivity is not always directly related to silicate content)

For ISO 4892-3, the following maximum limits are set:

  • 2 µg/g of solid matter
  • 0.5 µg/g of silicates
  • Conductivity < 5 µS/cm (conductivity is not always directly related to silicate content)

Irradiance

Set point parameter Maximum allowed deviation from the setpoint
For a single wavelength: 0.02W/(m2-nm)
For broadband (300-400 nm): 5W/m2

Temperature

  • At temperatures < 70°C, a maximum allowed deviation of ± 5°C applies
  • At temperatures > 70°C, a maximum allowed deviation of ±7°C applies

Relative humidity

If control of relative humidity is required, it should remain within 10% of the set value.

Number of samples

The number of samples can be determined by the client. If no agreement has been made, the standard recommends using at least three samples per material to be tested. The limits within which parameters such as temperature and humidity must fall.
